The device has two Air shocks, a small 12 Volt compressor one like you plug in a cigaret lighter to maintain presure, the air presure is controlled by a presure switch that canbe adjusted, compressor 12 volt power from trailer plug next to the hitch reciever. These type air shocks call for a max. presure of 90 PSI I only used aprox. 65 PSI, this setting leveled my Silverado with a ton of wood pellets The device turned out a little heavy, 140# I am working on a second model design to try to make it more portable and easier to handle. I donot care for air shocks, looking into a single acting cylinder for my next try. My present device works great going foreward down the road, the problem comes when backing up, I have a locking device to stop the wheels from castering when backing that seams to work ok streight or a slight radius. the air presure would half to be reduced if you needed to make a very sharp turn in reverse.
This type of load leveling device was shown in a magazine (FARM SHOW MAGAZINE) the one in the magazine had a single caster wheel and used an air bag for lift, quite different than mine, I haven't seen to date any other information on his type device. Their are load assist devices on the market that help with trailer hitch weight on the towing vehicle, but none that are portable that only help with pickup heavy loads, if anyone knows of such, please let me know. The device I built was for my own use, I donot plan to build any for others till I look into any such device already on the market? |
